Jewar Airport Nears Completion, Set to Transform Air Travel in India
Jewar Airport: A New Era for Indian Aviation
The Noida International Airport, commonly referred to as Jewar Airport, is nearing completion in Gautam Buddha Nagar, with one runway and a terminal ready to welcome its inaugural flight. Developed by Zurich International AG, the project is overseen by the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), ensuring adherence to international standards and timelines.
This airport marks India's first fully foreign direct investment (FDI) initiative in the aviation sector, with plans for six runways and six terminals, aiming to accommodate an anticipated annual passenger capacity of 225 million.
The expansion is expected to relieve congestion at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, which currently handles around 80 million passengers each year.
Arunvir Singh, CEO of YEIDA and an aviation expert, emphasized the significance of Jewar Airport in creating an international aviation hub. Located just 700 meters from the Yamuna Expressway, it is well-connected to major expressways, allowing travel from Jaipur to Jewar in approximately 2 hours and 21 minutes.
Before its official launch, the airport will integrate multimodal transport options, including a rapid rail corridor, an extension of the Noida Metro, and a planned Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system. Furthermore, Indian Railways is developing an underground link from Jewar to the Amritsar–Kolkata corridor via the Chola line.
The state government highlighted YEIDA's achievement in acquiring 6,000 hectares of land for the airport without facing any legal challenges, marking a significant milestone in conflict-free land acquisition. Jewar Airport is anticipated to not only serve the National Capital Region but also revolutionize civil aviation in India, becoming a key gateway for both domestic and international travel.
