Indian cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues will not participate in the forthcoming Women's Asia Cup and Asian Games due to a severe right hamstring injury sustained during England's franchise cricket tournament, The Hundred, as announced by the BCCI on Friday.
The injury occurred on August 3 while she was playing for Southern Brave in The Hundred. Following the incident, the BCCI Medical Team evaluated her condition at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, confirming the severity of the injury. The 25-year-old's absence is a significant setback for India's preparations for these two crucial T20 events.
Asia Cup Information and Replacement
In light of Rodrigues' injury, the Women's Selection Committee has appointed Pratika Rawal as her replacement for the Asia Cup. Rawal is making a return to the Indian squad after her recent performances with India A.
The Women's Asia Cup is set to commence on August 28 in Dubai, with India starting their campaign against Thailand on August 30. India is grouped in Group A with Thailand, Pakistan, and Hong Kong, while Group B includes Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the UAE, and Indonesia. The tournament will follow a T20 format, culminating in the final on September 13.
Consequences for the Asian Games
Rodrigues' absence will also impact the Asian Games, where India aims to defend the women's cricket title they secured at the 2023 Hangzhou Games. The cricket events at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games will be held in T20 format from September 17 to October 3. India previously clinched the women's gold medal in 2023 by defeating Sri Lanka in the final.
