Jeff Webb: Pioneer of Cheerleading and Conservative Media Passes Away
Tragic Loss of a Cheerleading Icon
Jeff Webb, aged 76, who revolutionized cheerleading into a multibillion-dollar sector and played a pivotal role in conservative media, has died due to an unfortunate incident while playing pickleball. During the game, Webb lost his footing, fell, and sustained a serious head injury. Despite being rushed to the hospital, his condition deteriorated, leading his family to make the heart-wrenching choice to take him off life support. He was 76 years old.
A Legacy in Cheerleading
Before venturing into politics and media, Jeff Webb was dedicated to transforming American sports culture. His journey began at the University of Oklahoma, where he served as a 'yell leader,' a role akin to today's spirit leaders. This passion led him to establish the Universal Cheerleading Association and Varsity Spirit, ultimately guiding Varsity Brands to a valuation in the billions. Under his leadership, cheerleading evolved from a mere sideline activity to a recognized competitive sport, characterized by its acrobatic and physically demanding nature. A 2024 profile in a major publication highlighted Webb's significant influence, noting that much of the sport's development was attributed to his vision and efforts. Webb himself stated that his motivation was rooted in discipline and the pursuit of excellence, rather than financial gain.
Influence in Conservative Media
In his later years, Webb shifted his focus to conservative media, taking on roles as senior editor and co-publisher of Human Events, and acquiring The Post Millennial, a prominent conservative platform. His ventures were reportedly inspired by discussions with Charlie Kirk, a notable conservative figure who tragically passed away in September 2025. Webb was recognized as one of Kirk's earliest and most impactful mentors, a bond that was evident when he stood with Kirk's family at the White House during the presentation of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Following Kirk's passing, Webb expressed profound respect for him, suggesting that Kirk had the potential to become a future president, with his legacy continuing to inspire new chapters of Turning Point USA.
Condolences from the Conservative Community
The announcement of Webb's passing elicited a wave of sorrow from the conservative community. Turning Point USA honored him as a visionary who significantly influenced countless young leaders and as a cherished friend to both the organization and Kirk. In tribute, the group released a nearly ten-minute video celebrating his life and contributions. Jeff Webb is survived by his wife Gina, son Jeffrey, daughter Caroline Webb Mason, and two grandchildren.
