Jay Shah Pushes for India's Bid to Host the 2036 Olympics
Jay Shah Advocates for 2036 Olympics Bid
Jay Shah, the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), recently inaugurated the Run for Girl Child Half Marathon 2.0 in Surat. During this event, he emphasized that India should pursue the opportunity to host the 2036 Olympics. Shah praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for securing the Commonwealth Games for India in 2030. He expressed his ambition for India to achieve 100 medals in the 2036 Olympics, with at least 10 of those medals coming from Gujarat.
"The Prime Minister has successfully brought the Commonwealth Games to India in 2030, but we must aim higher. We should also strive to host the 2036 Olympics. While we secured eight medals in the 2024 Olympics, I believe we need to aim for at least 100 medals in 2036, with a minimum of 10 from Gujarat. I am confident in this goal," stated Jay Shah.
Shah on India's Cricket Triumphs
In his address, Shah also reflected on the Indian men's cricket team's recent successes, including consecutive victories in ICC white-ball tournaments—the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy—following the disappointment of the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
"During the 2023 ODI World Cup, we captured hearts but fell short of winning the trophy. I mentioned at a private gathering that in 2024, we would not only win hearts but also the cup, and we did just that by clinching the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup final and the Champions Trophy," he added.
Looking Ahead: T20 World Cup 2026
Looking forward, the Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, is preparing to defend their title at the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The defending champions are placed in Group A alongside Namibia, Netherlands, Pakistan, and the United States. India will kick off their campaign against the USA on February 7.
