Indian soft tennis player Jay Meena achieved a remarkable milestone by securing a bronze medal at the Asian Games 2026 on September 23. He faced Japan's Takuya Kurosaka in the men's singles semi-finals, ultimately finishing with a bronze medal.

In the preliminary rounds, Meena showcased his skills by defeating Pakistan's Arain Hussain with a commanding 4-0 victory in their Group D match. He then triumphed over the Philippines' Sherwin Nuguit in a nail-biting quarterfinal, winning 4-3 to clinch a historic medal. Expectations were high for Meena to aim for gold after reaching the semi-finals.

Despite a valiant effort in a 45-minute match against his Japanese rival, Meena lost 2-4. Nevertheless, at just 24 years old, he made history as the first Indian soft tennis player to earn a medal at the Asian Games.

Originally from Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, Meena's first love was cricket, and he aspired to be a professional cricketer. His path took a turn when he discovered a soft tennis court at Pioneer Public School in Dewas.

Initially, he spent time observing players and assisting as a ball boy before he picked up a racquet himself. Despite being new to the sport, Meena quickly adapted, showcasing his innate talent and unwavering commitment, which propelled him from a curious onlooker to a competitive athlete.

A Rising Star in Soft Tennis

Jay Meena has already made a name for himself as a trailblazer in Indian soft tennis, rewriting the narrative of the sport in the country. Competing internationally since the age of 14, he has packed numerous achievements into his young career.

His first significant national success came in 2022 when he won a gold medal at the National Games in Gujarat, representing Madhya Pradesh. In 2024, he earned his first international medal, a bronze in mixed doubles at the World Soft Tennis Championships alongside Aadhya Tiwari.

In 2025, Meena became the National Champion in singles and secured a bronze medal at the Asian Soft Tennis Championships, marking him as the first Indian to medal at that event. Now, with his bronze at the Asian Games, he has solidified his legacy in Indian sports, transforming his unconventional beginnings into a remarkable achievement.
