Japanese PM Applauds Achievements at Asian Para Games
On Saturday, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi commended the remarkable spirit and accomplishments of athletes participating in the Asian Para Games 2026, emphasizing the "profound beauty" of para sports as the event approaches its conclusion. The Games commenced on October 18 and are set to wrap up on October 24 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister highlighted that this is Japan's inaugural hosting of the Asian Para Games and praised the performances of Team Japan. She acknowledged the athletes' determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship, expressing gratitude to the competitors and recognizing the support from their families, coaches, and others involved. "As the '5th Asian Para Games (2026/Aichi-Nagoya)' comes to a close today, it marks a historic moment for Japan, with 'TEAM JAPAN' showcasing exceptional performances across all events," she stated.
Medal Count and Future Aspirations
To date, Japan has secured a total of 186 medals at the Games, comprising 64 gold, 60 silver, and 62 bronze, positioning them second in the medal standings, trailing only China. "The athletes faced the potential for failure head-on, believed in their abilities, and showcased their full potential; they supported each other as teammates, persevering until the very end in their quest for victory, while also celebrating each other's efforts—these moments reaffirmed the profound beauty of para sports. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all athletes who inspired courage and emotion across Japan. Our deepest respect goes to the families, coaches, and everyone who has steadfastly supported the athletes throughout their journey," she added.
Takaichi noted that the Games have played a significant role in promoting para sports both in Japan and globally, making the sport more accessible to the public. She expressed optimism for Team Japan's future successes at the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games and the upcoming Asian Para Games in Doha, Qatar. "This event has been a valuable opportunity to share the appeal and magnificence of para sports with audiences in Japan and beyond, allowing many to connect with para sports on a personal level. We eagerly anticipate even greater achievements from 'TEAM JAPAN' on future grand stages, including the 'Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games' in two years and the next 'Asian Para Games' in Doha, Qatar, in four years," she remarked.
India's Remarkable Performance
In a parallel development, India concluded its participation in the Asian Para Games 2026 with a historic total of 114 medals, which includes 30 gold, 35 silver, and 49 bronze. The country's para-athletes delivered outstanding performances, achieving world records and historic victories across various disciplines. India surpassed its previous medal tally of 108 from the last edition, which consisted of 27 gold, 32 silver, and 49 bronze medals. The performance at Aichi-Nagoya exceeded expectations, especially considering that the Indian contingent was significantly smaller than that of the previous Games, with 168 para-athletes representing India in 2026 compared to 309 in Hangzhou.
