Jan Paul van Hecke Joins Tottenham Hotspur: A New Chapter Begins
A New Signing for Spurs
Jan Paul van Hecke, a seasoned defender from the Netherlands, has officially signed with Tottenham Hotspur from Brighton & Hove Albion on a long-term deal, as confirmed by the club's official announcement.
A Dream Realized
Upon his arrival, Jan Paul expressed his excitement, stating, "Joining such a prestigious club is a tremendous honor and feels like a dream come true. I have a strong rapport with the Head Coach and am eager to collaborate with him again. Micky (van de Ven) has shared wonderful insights about the club, and I am thrilled to begin this journey. Having played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as an opponent, I now look forward to stepping onto the pitch as a Spurs player in front of our supporters, which will be a memorable experience."
Career Progression
The 26-year-old center-back joins Spurs after establishing himself as a reliable Premier League and international defender at Brighton. He initially signed with the Seagulls at 20, following a brief stint with NAC Breda, where he made 16 appearances and contributed to the team's run to the KNVB Cup semi-finals.
To enhance his skills, he returned to the Netherlands on loan to Heerenveen, where he played in the top division during the 2020/21 season, also reaching the KNVB Cup semi-finals.
The following year, Jan Paul experienced English football with a loan to Blackburn Rovers, where he had an impressive season, earning the club's Player of the Year award, a first for a loan player.
Success at Brighton
Jan Paul's Premier League debut with Brighton came at the start of the 2022/23 season, marking a historic year for the club as they finished sixth and qualified for European competition for the first time, alongside a run to the FA Cup semi-finals.
He became an integral part of Roberto De Zerbi's squad, making 39 appearances across all competitions in the following season, including seven in the UEFA Europa League.
In the 2024/25 season, he was honored with both the Player of the Season and Players' Player of the Season awards, and in 2025/26, he recorded over 2,500 passes in the Premier League, ranking second in the league for touches.
International Experience
Jan Paul made his debut for the Netherlands Under-21 team in June 2022 and earned his first senior cap in September 2024 during a 2-2 match against Germany. He has since accumulated 13 international caps and made his World Cup debut recently, contributing to a 2-2 draw against Japan.
