Severe Rainfall Triggers Flood Alert in Jammu


Jammu: In the past 24 hours, Jammu city has experienced a significant rainfall of 190.4 mm, prompting officials to issue a flood alert for Samba district as the Basantar Nallah exceeded its danger threshold.


The heavy rain persisted, leading to a notable increase in water levels in the region, particularly affecting the Basantar Nallah.


By 8 a.m., the water level reached six feet, surpassing the evacuation threshold.


The stream's alert level is set at four feet, with the danger level at 4.5 feet and the evacuation level at six feet.


Residents in low-lying areas and those near riverbanks have been warned to stay away from the water. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent any incidents.


The ongoing rainfall has raised concerns, and district officials are closely monitoring the situation.


Relief and rescue teams are on standby in anticipation of further water level increases.


Jammu city recorded 190.4 mm of rainfall up until 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.


Additionally, the J&K disaster management authority has indicated that heavy rain is expected in several areas, including Anantnag, Kulgam, Doda, Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Kishtwar, Reasi, Ramban, Rajouri, Poonch, and Udhampur districts over the next 48 hours.


The statement warned of potential cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides in the Jammu Division, advising residents to stay alert and contact emergency services at 112 if needed.


The Meteorological Department has forecasted generally light to moderate rainfall across most areas, with heavy rain anticipated in select regions of Jammu, Reasi, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur, and Rajouri districts until August 26.


The MeT Department has also cautioned people to avoid riverbanks and unstable structures.
