Jammu and Kashmir's Historic Ranji Trophy Victory: A Milestone for Indian Cricket
BCCI Secretary Commends J&K Team
Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), expressed his admiration for the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team following their remarkable victory in the Ranji Trophy. He emphasized that this achievement marks a significant milestone not only for J&K cricket but also for Indian cricket as a whole. Saikia particularly praised Auqib Nabi, a fast bowler from J&K, who concluded the Ranji Trophy season with an impressive tally of 60 wickets, including seven five-wicket hauls, indicating that his consistent performance will certainly catch the attention of the Indian selectors.
J&K Triumphs Over Karnataka
Under the leadership of Paras Dogra, Jammu and Kashmir ended a 67-year wait for a Ranji Trophy title by defeating the formidable Karnataka team. This victory, achieved in their first-ever Ranji final, was secured with a commanding first-innings lead of 291 runs, a gap that proved too large for the eight-time champions, Karnataka, captained by Devdutt Padikkal.
Significance of the Victory
"This is a monumental moment for Indian cricket. Jammu and Kashmir has clinched its first Ranji Trophy title, which is a significant achievement for both J&K and Indian cricket. The BCCI's goal has always been to promote cricket across the nation, ensuring that everyone can engage with this beloved sport," Saikia remarked.
Focus on Auqib Nabi
"Jammu and Kashmir has gained attention over the past few years. Many players are now being considered for the IPL and the Indian national team. Auqib Nabi has excelled in crucial matches, taking five wickets in the semi-final, final, and quarter-final. The selectors were present and will undoubtedly recognize his outstanding performance. There are many other talented players in the J&K squad as well," Saikia noted.
Nabi has played a pivotal role in J&K's successful Ranji Trophy campaign, consistently delivering impressive performances regardless of pitch conditions. He concluded the 2025/26 Ranji season as the leading wicket-taker, achieving 60 wickets in 10 matches with an average of 12.56. Following this season, he is set to join the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming Indian Premier League after being acquired for Rs 8.40 crore during the auction last December.
