Jammu and Kashmir Police Utilize Facial Recognition to Detain Terrorist Associate Ahead of Amarnath Yatra

Significant Security Measures for Amarnath Yatra
In a notable security advancement prior to the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SANJY-2025), the Jammu and Kashmir Police apprehended a terrorist over-ground worker (OGW) through a newly adopted Facial Recognition System (FRS) near Pahalgam in the Anantnag district. This incident marks the inaugural use of such technology for detaining suspects in the Valley.
The apprehension took place at the Langanbal Naka checkpoint, where the FRS identified the individual, a local from Seer Hamdan under the jurisdiction of Police Station Mattan. The suspect, who has a criminal record dating back to 2005 and was employed as a carpenter, was subsequently transferred to Police Station Pahalgam for further legal action, as confirmed by a senior police official.
This prompt action highlights the efficacy of technology in law enforcement, especially as preparations ramp up for the forthcoming yatra. The police emphasized that this operation acts as a strong warning to potential offenders and terrorist affiliates during this crucial period.
Alongside the FRS implementation, security forces have significantly enhanced electronic monitoring along all routes leading to the pilgrimage to guarantee a secure and smooth experience for the devotees. Authorities have stated that any attempts to disrupt public order or endanger the safety of pilgrims will be swiftly detected and dealt with according to the law.
Comprehensive security measures are being enforced throughout Jammu and Kashmir in anticipation of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. The routes from Pahalgam and Baltal have been designated as no-flying zones, and helicopter services for pilgrims have been suspended this year due to security apprehensions.
