Police Action on Misleading Information

On Tuesday, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir took action against various news outlets and individuals for allegedly disseminating false information regarding protests triggered by the death of Iranโ€™s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Srinagar Police reported this development.

Following Khamenei's death on Sunday, which occurred during a military operation involving the United States and Israel, protests erupted across multiple Indian states. Khamenei was regarded as a significant figure among Shia Muslims worldwide.

Reports indicate that at least 14 individuals, including six security personnel, sustained injuries during the protests in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, according to a local media outlet.

In response to the unrest, authorities in the Union Territory restricted mobile internet speeds.

The Srinagar Police stated that they are aware of the โ€œdeliberate circulation of false, fabricated, and misleading informationโ€ by certain media channels and individuals on various platforms.

They emphasized that these actions are aimed at spreading distorted narratives and unverified content, intending to incite unrest and disrupt public order.

A first information report has been filed, and several individuals have been identified and summoned to the cyber cell for questioning.

While the police did not disclose the specific misleading information or the identities of those booked, they urged citizens and media organizations to verify facts from credible sources before sharing content that could disturb public harmony.

The conflict in West Asia escalated on Saturday when Israel and the US launched attacks on Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate against US military bases and target major cities in neighboring Gulf countries.

The assassination of Khamenei, who had held power over all government branches and the military since 1989, has further intensified the already volatile situation in the region.
