Commitment to Accessibility and Inclusion

Jammu, Dec 3: On Wednesday, Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, emphasized the need for society to recommit to dismantling obstacles and fostering equal opportunities for all, particularly for individuals with disabilities.

In a message shared on the social media platform X, Sinha stated, "As we observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, let us renew our pledge to eliminate barriers, enhance equal opportunities, and work towards an inclusive and accessible society that ensures dignity and full participation for everyone, as we strive for a Viksit Bharat."

This statement coincides with the global observance of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities.

Marked annually on December 3, this day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1992 to raise awareness about disability issues and garner support for the rights, dignity, and welfare of individuals with disabilities. The objectives include promoting their inclusion in all facets of life and ensuring their full participation in society.

The day aims to advocate for the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities while increasing awareness of their complete integration into society.

Proclaimed through resolution 47/3 by the United Nations General Assembly in 1992, the day encourages a society where individuals with disabilities can engage equally in political, social, economic, and cultural activities.

This observance holds particular importance for Jammu and Kashmir, where numerous innocent civilians have suffered due to terrorism sponsored by Pakistan over the past four decades.

Innocent civilians often find themselves victims of grenade attacks and gunfire from terrorists, leading to significant casualties.

With hundreds of lives lost to terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir over the last 40 years, the number of individuals left with physical and mental disabilities has unfortunately increased.
