Support for Flood Victims in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu, August 5 - The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, announced on Wednesday that families who have lost their homes due to recent cloudbursts will be allocated plots of five marlas. He also mentioned that the government is considering the implementation of advanced early warning systems to enhance disaster preparedness and minimize future loss of life and property. Abdullah visited flood-affected areas in Poonch district to assess the devastation caused by sudden floods and cloudbursts.

During his visit, he met with affected families and reviewed the relief and rehabilitation efforts being undertaken by the district administration. The Chief Minister expressed his condolences to families in Murrah, Surankot, and Arigam-Loran, assuring them of the government's support in every possible way. He specifically visited the home of Mohammad Lateef in Murrah, who tragically lost eight family members in the unexpected flood.

In Surankot, Abdullah engaged with affected families and a delegation from Sangla, Darra Sangla, and Lower Sangla. The delegation informed him about the damage to residential homes, agricultural land, and infrastructure, as well as the loss of lives. Abdullah announced a significant initiative for rehabilitation, stating that families rendered landless due to the disaster would be provided with five marla plots for resettlement.

Later, he chaired a review meeting to evaluate the ongoing rescue, relief, and rehabilitation operations conducted by the district administration post-disaster. An official spokesperson noted that he praised the proactive leadership of Poonch's Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Sharma and Senior Superintendent of Police Shafqat Hussain, whose timely interventions helped save lives and deliver prompt assistance to the affected population.
