CM Omar Abdullah's Response to Ceasefire
Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, expressed his approval of the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan. He remarked that had this agreement been reached a few days earlier, many lives could have been saved. The Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) from Pakistan reached out to their Indian counterpart, leading to the implementation of the ceasefire. Abdullah emphasized the current government's duty to assess the damages incurred and initiate relief efforts for those affected. He stressed the importance of providing proper medical care to the injured and ensuring that government relief measures are activated.
Damage Assessment and Relief Efforts
Abdullah noted the significant destruction caused by the recent violence. He instructed the District Collector to promptly conduct a comprehensive damage assessment and report back so that relief can be distributed to the affected households. Additionally, he mentioned that the local airport has been closed for several days, expressing hope that it would reopen following the ceasefire. Earlier, Abdullah announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives due to Pakistani shelling in the Union Territory.
Casualties from Recent Violence
In response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam last month, Indian armed forces targeted nine terrorist positions across the border on May 7. This led to increased shelling from Pakistan over the past four days, resulting in the deaths of an additional District Development Commissioner and 19 civilians in the Poonch, Rajouri, Jammu, and Baramulla sectors. Among the casualties, 12 individuals lost their lives in Poonch on Wednesday, while two more were killed in Uri and Poonch on Friday. Furthermore, on Saturday morning, five people, including a senior government official, were killed due to Pakistani shelling. The Chief Minister expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives due to the recent shelling from Pakistan, stating that his government is committed to alleviating the hardships faced by its citizens.
