Jamie Siddons Appointed as Head Coach of Sri Lanka Women's Cricket Team

New Leadership for Sri Lanka Women's Cricket

On Thursday, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) revealed that former Australian cricketer Jamie Siddons will take on the role of head coach for the national women's cricket team. He succeeds Rumesh Ratnayake, who completed his tenure quietly at the end of 2025.

Review of Ratnayake's Coaching Period

Ratnayake, who was appointed in February 2023, significantly contributed to the evolution of the Sri Lankan women's cricket team, transforming them from underdogs to a more formidable competitor. Despite still lagging behind top teams like Australia and India in terms of consistency, his leadership led to historic achievements, including Sri Lanka's inaugural Asia Cup title in 2024, secured with a remarkable win against India in the final. However, inconsistencies persisted, as evidenced by the team's early exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup without a victory. While they celebrated series wins against South Africa and England, their performance plateaued following a lackluster showing in the home 50-over World Cup in October.

Siddons' Objectives and Contract Details

As per the ICC, Siddons will officially begin his role on March 16, 2026, for a one-year term. His primary focus will be to prepare the team for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, which is set to take place in England in June and July. Siddons will kick off his coaching journey with the Sri Lanka women's tour of Bangladesh, scheduled for April-May 2026.

Siddons' Background and Coaching Experience

During his domestic career, Siddons captained both South Australia and Victoria, accumulating 10,643 runs in the Sheffield Shield, making him the third-highest run-scorer in this prestigious competition. His international experience includes a single ODI match against Pakistan in October 1988. A Level 3 certified coach, Siddons has a wealth of coaching experience, having managed the Bangladesh men's team from 2007 to 2011, South Australia from 2015 to 2020, and New Zealand's Wellington Firebirds from 2011 to 2015.

Recent Achievements of the Team

This announcement follows the Sri Lankan women's team's impressive 2-0 victory over the West Indies in a three-match T20I series, showcasing their strong momentum as they prepare for future international competitions.
