Jaismine Lamboria, the reigning world champion in the women's 57kg boxing category, has guaranteed India another medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026. She achieved this by defeating England's Elise Glynn with a score of 4-1 in the quarterfinals held on Wednesday night, securing her place in the semifinals. The 24-year-old athlete from Haryana showcased her skills in a tightly contested match, finishing strong in the final round to earn the judges' favor and at least a bronze medal.
As all losing semifinalists receive bronze, this marks Lamboria's second consecutive medal at the Commonwealth Games, following her bronze win at the Birmingham 2022 edition, as reported by ESPN. The match was closely contested throughout the three rounds, with both competitors exchanging punches effectively. Glynn tried to increase the pace with aggressive body shots in the final moments, but Lamboria countered with precise movements and timely combinations. Ultimately, her impressive performance in the last round led four out of five judges to declare her the winner by a 4-1 split decision.
India's Boxing Achievements at Glasgow
Starting the tournament as the reigning world champion, Lamboria has kept her hopes for a Commonwealth Games gold alive and is set to compete in the semifinals on July 31. She has become the sixth Indian boxer to secure a medal from the boxing team on Day 7 in Glasgow. Earlier, other boxers including Sakshi Choudhary (women's 51kg), Arundhati Choudhary (women's 70kg), Sachin Siwach (men's 60kg), Ankush Yadav (men's 80kg), and Narender Berwal (men's 90+kg) also advanced to the semifinals, ensuring at least bronze medals for themselves.
India's boxing team has emerged as a significant contributor to the nation's medal tally at the Games, with nine medals now assured from this sport. Jadumani Singh, Priya Ghanghas, and Preeti Pawar also secured medals with their quarterfinal victories on Day 6.
