On Tuesday, Jairam Thakur, the former Chief Minister and current Leader of Opposition, launched a fierce critique against the Congress-led government in Himachal Pradesh. He accused Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of overseeing significant financial mismanagement, administrative inconsistencies, and escalating corruption.

During a press conference in Mandi, following a state executive meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Thakur expressed alarm over the state's financial situation, highlighting delays in salary payments to government employees, officials, and elected representatives. He characterized the current fiscal strain as unprecedented in the state's administrative history.

Concerns Regarding Financial Management

Thakur raised serious concerns about the government's financial strategies, claiming that recent policy decisions have severely undermined the state's fiscal health. He compared the borrowing practices of past administrations, noting that while his government borrowed around ₹19,000 crore over five years, the current administration has accrued over ₹40,000 crore in a much shorter timeframe, resulting in a total debt exceeding ₹1.10 lakh crore.

He argued that this trend indicates a lack of fiscal discipline and foresight, which could jeopardize the state's economic stability.

Corruption Allegations and Governance Issues

The Leader of Opposition also pointed to what he described as a rise in corruption during the current administration. He claimed that numerous cases involving public officials and representatives have emerged, raising serious questions about transparency and accountability.

Thakur referenced the Chester Hills controversy, alleging violations of statutory provisions, including Section 118, and hinted at potential benami transactions. He accused a senior official of misusing their position while in a critical administrative role, asserting that this situation necessitates a comprehensive and impartial investigation.

Highlighting Administrative Inconsistencies

Thakur criticized the government's administrative operations, citing recent decisions that he claimed contradicted directives from the highest bureaucratic levels regarding service extensions, which were simultaneously approved by the Chief Minister’s Office.

He suggested that these developments indicate a lack of coordination within the government, raising concerns about institutional clarity and governance processes.

Political Commentary and Centre-State Relations

In his statements, Thakur also took aim at the Chief Minister's public remarks, alleging that many claims made during election campaigns and public addresses were misleading. He noted that the state government has been hesitant to officially recognize financial aid received from the Centre, despite its use for developmental projects.

He cited an example where the state received financial support after a high-level meeting with the Prime Minister, arguing that cooperative federalism should be acknowledged openly.

BJP's Political Strategy

Thakur mentioned the BJP's state executive meeting in Mandi, which took place after an eight-year hiatus, stating that the party has adopted significant political resolutions and plans to enhance its outreach across the state to address what it describes as 'public-centric concerns' stemming from the government's policies.

He also highlighted conflicting statements from senior government officials regarding long-term developmental objectives, such as making Himachal Pradesh self-sufficient by 2027, suggesting that such inconsistencies could undermine public trust.

Several senior BJP leaders, including MLAs Anil Sharma and Balbir Verma, party vice-president Bihari Lal Sharma, general secretary Payal Vaidya, media in-charge Rakesh Walia, and district spokesperson Pratap Thakur, attended the press conference.
