Sanitation Crisis in Jaipur

In Jaipur, the sanitation system faced a complete breakdown on Saturday morning as thousands of sanitation workers initiated an indefinite strike under the banner of the Joint Valmiki and Sanitation Workers Union. On the first day of the protest, significant unrest was observed in the historic walled city area, where demonstrators created a blockade by spilling garbage onto the streets using tractors and trolleys.

Escalation of Protests

According to senior officials of the union, sanitation workers had been on a hunger strike for the past week. Frustrated by the lack of attention from the administration and government regarding their demands, they decided to escalate their protest with a collective work boycott. On Saturday morning, when attempts were made to operate garbage collection vehicles in some areas, a large number of Valmiki community sanitation workers gathered at key locations, halting garbage collection and dumping waste onto main roads, causing significant inconvenience to pedestrians and drivers.

Key Demands of the Sanitation Workers

The protesting workers are firmly standing by their six primary demands:

  1. Transparent Recruitment Process: They demand that the government expedite the recruitment process for sanitation workers in a transparent manner, as previously agreed upon.

  2. Job Security and Rights: They seek protection of the traditional sanitation rights of the Valmiki community and a halt to contract and outsourcing practices.

  3. Implementation of Pending Promises: They insist that the Greater and Heritage Municipal Corporation administrations immediately fulfill previously approved demands.
