Naveen Jindal Discusses Polo's Heritage and Future

A Historic Venue, India's Gift to the World

After the match, Naveen Jindal expressed his pride in the Jaipur Polo Grounds, stating, "This venue is one of the most historic in India, where polo has been played for over a century. It holds a rich legacy, including the famous 1922 match between Jodhpur and Patiala, which attracted over 150,000 spectators. This ground is not just a venue; it is the heart of Indian polo and the home of the Indian Polo Association. Polo originated in India, specifically in Manipur, before becoming a global sport."

Championship Stakes and Player Safety

He further noted, "The Indian Open Championship is the pinnacle of polo in the country, akin to a World Cup at the 14-goal level. Unfortunately, heavy rain made conditions unsafe, as wet turf increases the risk of injury to the horses, necessitating the match's early conclusion."

The Role of World-Class Horses

Jindal added, "Each player typically brings 8 to 10 horses, and we had around 70 to 75 horses on the field today, many of which are elite breeds from Argentina and New Zealand. These horses are exceptional athletes, requiring extensive care, training, and a strong bond with their riders."

Growing Appeal and Future of Polo

He concluded, "It's encouraging to see such a large turnout today, with many experiencing polo for the first time. Watching the sport is one thing, but being on the field, whether as a player or alongside these magnificent horses, is a completely different experience. I believe polo will continue to grow and reach millions more."
