New Delhi, April 8: On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sanctioned the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 initiative, which entails a significant investment of Rs 13,037.66 crore. This project will establish a 41 km North-South corridor stretching from Prahladpura to Todi Mod, featuring 36 stations throughout the city.

The Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL), a joint venture equally owned by the Centre and the Rajasthan government, will oversee the project's implementation.

The new corridor aims to enhance connectivity to key areas such as the Sitapura Industrial Area, VKIA, Jaipur Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital, Stadium, Ambabari, and Vidhyadhar Nagar. It will include underground stations near the airport and will connect with the existing Phase-1 through planned interchanges and feeder systems, creating a cohesive metro network across Jaipur, as stated in a Cabinet announcement.

Currently, Jaipur operates a metro system under Phase-1, which runs along an East-West corridor from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar, covering 11.64 km with 11 stations. This line links vital residential and commercial districts with the Central Business District of Jaipur, which encompasses the Heritage Walled City. The upcoming Phase-2, designed along the North-South axis, will enhance the existing corridor and provide comprehensive metro connectivity throughout the city, significantly alleviating traffic congestion and improving urban mobility.

At present, the Phase-1 metro line serves approximately 60,000 passengers daily on its shorter 11.64 km route. The introduction of Phase-2 is anticipated to greatly increase ridership, thereby boosting public transport usage in Jaipur and decreasing reliance on private vehicles.

Phase-2 has been thoroughly evaluated through various levels, including Inter-Ministerial Consultation, Network Planning Group review, and Public Investment Board assessment. The project boasts an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) exceeding the threshold of 14%, indicating strong socio-economic feasibility. Funding will be sourced through equity contributions from both the Centre and the Rajasthan government, subordinate debt, and multilateral financing, in line with the Metro Rail Policy of 2017, as per the announcement.

This initiative aligns with the Rajasthan TOD Policy-2025, proposed UMTA reforms, and national sustainable urban transport goals. Scheduled for completion by September 2031, Jaipur Metro Phase-2 is expected to significantly mitigate traffic congestion, reduce vehicle emissions, and improve mobility for residents, workers, and tourists, thereby reinforcing Jaipur's status as a modern, forward-looking city and contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat and Viksit Rajasthan.
