Italy Dominates Group B

Italy has clinched the top position in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Challenge League Group B following a decisive eight-wicket victory against Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday. The team controlled their destiny, finishing the tournament with a four-point lead over Uganda, who suffered a last-over defeat to Bahrain.

Path to ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027

This victory marks a significant achievement for Italy, as they, along with Uganda, advance towards the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027. Both teams will participate in the Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off later this year, which features eight teams, including the top two from Challenge League A and the bottom four from Cricket World Cup League 2.

Azzurri's Unbeaten Final Leg

After competing in Hong Kong and Uganda, Italy entered the final leg of the competition trailing Uganda with five matchdays left. A crucial win against Uganda early in this leg allowed Italy to gain momentum, especially after Uganda's loss to Hong Kong. Italy capitalized on this opportunity, finishing the tour undefeated, highlighted by a strong performance against Tanzania.

Spin Trio Dismantles Tanzania

In a repeat of their previous match against Hong Kong, Italy lost the toss again. Tanzania initially surged to 87/1 within 15 overs, but the hosts collapsed to 142 all out. The Italian spin trio of Rakibul Hasan, Akash Waduwalage, and Crishan Kalugamage wreaked havoc, taking all ten wickets for just 87 runs. Waduwalage's impressive 5/21 included the vital wicket of Dhrumit Mehta (39), while Kalugamage contributed with 3/28.

Mosca Brothers Lead the Charge

In response, Italy's batting was formidable, with brothers Justin and AJ Mosca both scoring half-centuries in a partnership of 121 runs. Justin scored 52 runs, while AJ remained unbeaten at 75 off just 71 balls, alongside skipper Harry Manenti (8 not out), as they chased down the target in just 26 overs.

Looking Ahead: The Qualifier Play-off

Italy and Uganda now await the announcement of their opponents for the Qualifier Play-off. Currently, Jersey and Kuwait are leading in the other Challenge League group, while Namibia, Canada, Nepal, and the United Arab Emirates occupy the bottom four spots in League 2. The Qualifier Play-off will finalize the last four teams for the Cricket World Cup Qualifier, which will also grant One Day International status to the participating teams.
