Israel's Strikes on Beirut Complicate US-Iran Peace Negotiations
Recent Israeli Military Actions Raise Tensions
As diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran progress, with a potential agreement anticipated today, tensions have escalated following Israel's recent airstrikes on Beirut, targeting Hezbollah positions. This latest military action has drawn sharp criticism from Iranian Parliament Speaker MB Galibhaf, who condemned the US for its perceived failure to uphold commitments. He remarked that the strategy of playing 'bad cop' and 'good cop' is no longer effective, emphasizing that if the US lacks the resolve or capability to meet its obligations, discussions about future cooperation are futile.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Galibhaf stated, “The Zionists' incursion into Dahiyeh has once again shown that America either lacks the will to fulfill its commitments or the ability to do so. By giving the green light to the regime, you cannot gain concessions. The game of bad cop and good cop is outdated. If you lack the will and ability to fulfill your commitments, speaking of continuing the path is not possible.”
Impact of Israeli Strikes on Peace Negotiations
The recent airstrikes pose a significant threat to ongoing peace negotiations, which have already disappointed the Israeli government. The previous strikes on Beirut suburbs a week ago marked a serious escalation in hostilities between Iran and Israel since the ceasefire established on April 7. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office stated that these strikes were a direct response to Hezbollah's attacks on northern Israel. Earlier, the Israeli military reported that Hezbollah had fired three projectiles into northern Israel, with footage capturing the aftermath of the attack, including a visible explosion and smoke rising from the area.
According to an Associated Press photographer in Beirut, the targeted site was a five-story apartment building with commercial spaces on the ground floor, suffering extensive damage to its lower levels. Many residents of the southern suburbs, who had recently returned home after a period of relative peace, were seen evacuating the area amidst the renewed violence.
