Israel's Major Overhaul of Rehabilitation for Wounded Soldiers
Significant Changes to Soldier Rehabilitation System
Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, has revealed that his administration has sanctioned a comprehensive reform of the rehabilitation framework for injured IDF soldiers and security personnel. He asserts that this initiative will revolutionize the Rehabilitation Department of the Israeli Defense Ministry by enhancing staffing levels, increasing funding, and granting greater autonomy, all while minimizing bureaucratic hurdles. The introduction of artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies is also part of this reform aimed at improving rehabilitation and mental health services.
Under the new system, each injured veteran will be assigned a specific case manager to oversee their treatment and benefits, with a streamlined process for eligibility. Additionally, family members will benefit from enhanced psychological support, and a new automated system will ensure that veterans’ benefits are updated proactively. Netanyahu emphasized, “The plan we approved will provide them with a broad and comprehensive support system. Our wounded soldiers went into battle to defend the state, and we are fighting for them and for their rehabilitation. This is not only our moral duty, it is our national duty.”

Netanyahu expressed gratitude to Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich for their roles in facilitating this decision. This announcement follows a warning from the Israeli Defense Ministry earlier this month regarding the potential collapse of its rehabilitation system. The ministry reported that since the onset of the war, over 26,000 wounded IDF soldiers and security personnel have sought treatment, with approximately 65 percent of these cases related to psychological issues. Projections indicate that the total number of wounded veterans could exceed 90,000 by 2026 and reach around 100,000 by 2028.
