Israel Claims Major Strike Against Hezbollah in Beirut

Israel has launched significant airstrikes in Beirut, targeting Hezbollah leadership, including the nephew of a prominent leader. The attacks resulted in high casualties, with 182 reported dead and over 800 injured. This escalation has drawn a response from Iran, which has closed the Strait of Hormuz and called for an end to hostilities. The situation complicates ongoing diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire with the United States. As tensions rise, the implications for regional stability remain uncertain.

Israel's Airstrikes Target Hezbollah Leadership

On Thursday, Israel announced that its military conducted severe airstrikes in Beirut, Lebanon, on Wednesday night, resulting in the death of Ali Yusuf Harshi, the nephew of Hezbollah leader Naeem Qassem, along with a close associate. This information was shared through a post by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which stated that Harshi, who served as Qassem's personal secretary, played a crucial role in managing and securing Qassem's office.

The IDF reported that it targeted two key junctions in southern Lebanon, utilized by Hezbollah for transporting thousands of weapons, rockets, and launchers. Additionally, the Israeli forces struck approximately ten weapon storage facilities, launchers, and headquarters belonging to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Significant Casualties from the Airstrikes

The airstrikes on Wednesday were among the largest conducted by Israel against Hezbollah, targeting various locations in Beirut and other parts of Lebanon. Reports indicate that these attacks resulted in 182 fatalities and over 800 injuries. In a coordinated operation, Israel launched nearly 100 missiles within a span of ten minutes, focusing on Hezbollah leaders in Beirut, southern Lebanon, and the Bekaa Valley.

Israel has accused Hezbollah of operating from civilian areas, a claim that has been denied by residents and local officials, particularly in regions where residential buildings were struck without warning. Hezbollah is an Iran-backed militant group based in Lebanon and has been engaged in a prolonged conflict with Israel for years.

Iran's Response and Diplomatic Tensions

In retaliation, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz and called for an end to hostilities in Lebanon, complicating a ceasefire agreement with the United States ahead of upcoming delegation-level talks in Pakistan on Saturday. Iran claims that ending the conflict in Lebanon was one of ten demands presented for a ceasefire; however, both Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu have denied that Lebanon was ever included in the agreement.
