Ishan Kishan Steps Up as Captain

In a significant move, Ishan Kishan has been appointed as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, stepping in for Pat Cummins, who is sidelined due to a back injury.

This decision follows Cummins' announcement that he will miss the initial matches of IPL 2026, leading SRH to entrust the captaincy to Kishan, with Abhishek Sharma serving as his deputy. Kishan, retained for INR 11.25 crore ahead of the IPL mini-auction, is set to play his second consecutive season with SRH.

Kishan's Impressive T20 World Cup Performance

The franchise's choice to elevate Kishan to captaincy comes on the heels of his outstanding performance in the T20 World Cup 2026, where he scored 317 runs, including three fifties, averaging 35.22 with a remarkable strike rate of 193.92 across nine matches. His contributions were vital in securing the title for the Indian team.

Captaincy Experience and Performance

Kishan's journey with SRH began with a strong debut in IPL 2025, where he accumulated 354 runs, featuring a century and a fifty, with an average of 35.40 and a strike rate of 152.58 over 14 matches. Despite his lack of IPL captaincy experience, Kishan has previously led India in the U19 World Cup and Jharkhand in domestic competitions.

His T20 captaincy record is impressive, winning 24 out of 29 matches since 2019. Notably, he guided Jharkhand to their first Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy victory, showcasing his ability to lead effectively under pressure.

Balancing Captaincy and Batting

Kishan has thrived under captaincy, scoring 1078 runs in 29 matches, including four centuries and three fifties, with an average of 43.12. His performance during Jharkhand's title-winning campaign in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was particularly noteworthy, where he scored 517 runs, including two centuries, at an average of 57.44.

In addition to his domestic success, Kishan has shown consistency in T20 matches, scoring 561 runs outside of Jharkhand's campaign, proving that he can balance his responsibilities as both a captain and a batter.

A Defining Opportunity for Kishan

Leading SRH in the IPL presents a significant opportunity for Kishan to showcase his leadership skills on a larger platform. With Cummins out for the initial matches, Kishan's role could be pivotal in shaping his future as a leader in the franchise.

This stint not only allows him to demonstrate his tactical abilities but also positions him as a potential long-term captain for SRH. While Abhishek Sharma is also in contention for the captaincy, Kishan's performance during this period could solidify his claim as a future leader.
