Ish Sodhi Out of T20I Series Due to Injury as South Africa Takes Lead
Ish Sodhi Out with Broken Thumb
Ish Sodhi, the experienced leg-spinner from New Zealand, has been sidelined for the remainder of the T20I series against South Africa due to a broken thumb, as confirmed by New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Monday. The injury occurred during a net session at Bay Oval on Saturday when he was struck on the thumb. Medical scans have indicated that he will need a minimum of four weeks for rehabilitation.
Coach's Disappointment and Team Adjustments
New Zealand's head coach, Rob Walter, expressed his disappointment regarding Sodhi's injury. With Lockie Ferguson joining the team for the upcoming matches in Hamilton and Auckland, the squad will not seek a replacement for the next game. The second T20I is scheduled to take place at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Tuesday, with South Africa currently leading the five-match series 1-0.
"Ish is deeply passionate about representing New Zealand, and he was eager to play in front of home fans following the World Cup," Walter stated. "His extensive experience in T20 cricket will be greatly missed. However, we are confident in our squad's depth with Lockie, Mitch (Santner), and Cole (McConchie) available for the next two matches before we adjust for the final two games."
