India's Olympic Aspirations


Varanasi: On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's robust preparations to host the 2036 Olympic Games, highlighting his administration's dedication to creating more opportunities for athletes through major sporting events.


Speaking via video link at the opening of the 72nd Senior National Volleyball Championship, Modi noted that the government is committed to enhancing exposure for emerging athletes in Olympic sports, with initiatives like Khelo India playing a pivotal role in nurturing talent.


Modi stated, "India will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and is making significant strides towards the 2036 Olympics, aiming to provide more athletes with competitive opportunities."


He added that the Khelo India initiative has enabled numerous young individuals to reach the national level.


The Prime Minister pointed out that programs such as the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) are revolutionizing India's sports landscape by focusing on infrastructure development, funding, and offering young athletes international exposure.


India's growing influence in sports is evident, having hosted over 20 prestigious international events in the past decade, including the FIFA Under-17 World Cup and the Hockey World Cup.


Reflecting on the past, Modi remarked on the significant shift in societal attitudes towards sports over the last ten years.


He mentioned that the government has substantially increased the sports budget, transforming India's sports model to prioritize athletes through talent identification, scientific training, nutrition, and transparent selection processes.


Modi stated, "The nation is on a 'reform express,' connecting every sector, including sports, to development goals."


He noted that India's advancements are not just economic but also visible in the sports arena, with improved performances since 2014.


Discussing reforms, Modi highlighted the National Sports Governance Act and the Khelo Bharat Policy 2025, which aim to enhance transparency and provide opportunities for deserving talent.


He stressed that these initiatives will enable youth to progress in both sports and education.


The Prime Minister expressed pride in Varanasi emerging as a key sports hub, emphasizing the significance of hosting the National Volleyball Competition for the city.


The tournament, scheduled from January 4 to 11, will feature over 1,000 athletes from 58 teams nationwide.


Modi remarked, "Hosting the National Volleyball Tournament in Varanasi highlights our commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure and fostering athletic growth in the region."


Drawing a connection between volleyball and India's development, he stated, "Volleyball teaches us that success is a collective effort, reliant on coordination and trust among team members. Our nation's progress mirrors this principle."
