Is Bangladesh's Interim Leader Muhammad Yunus Considering Resignation Amid Political Turmoil?

Political Unrest in Bangladesh

Dhaka: Muhammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh's interim government, is reportedly contemplating stepping down due to the ongoing political impasse among various parties, which is hindering his ability to govern effectively, as per a media report.

Nhid Islam, leader of the student-led National Citizen Party, shared with BBC Bangla Service that Yunus is concerned about the current political climate and his capacity to fulfill his responsibilities.

There have been indications of tension between the military and the interim government regarding the timeline for upcoming parliamentary elections.

While Islam mentioned that Yunus is weighing the option of resigning from his role as Chief Advisor, there has been no official confirmation or statement from his office regarding this matter.

Islam quoted Yunus as saying, 'If I can’t work… I was brought here after a mass uprising to bring change and reform to the country. But in the current situation, with mounting pressure from movements and the way I’m being cornered, this isn’t how I can work. The political parties—you’ve all failed to reach common ground.'

Islam, who played a significant role in the Students Against Discrimination movement that led to the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last July, urged Yunus to remain resilient for the sake of the nation's security and future, emphasizing the need to meet the expectations of the mass uprising.

He expressed hope that all parties would support Yunus during this challenging time.

In recent days, Yunus's administration has encountered multiple challenges, including rising tensions within the interim Cabinet.

On May 12, the interim government officially disbanded Hasina's Awami League under a newly revised anti-terrorism law, just two days after imposing a ban on its activities under the previous version of the law.

Political factions have been pressing Yunus to announce a date for the next elections.
