Importance of Pressure Management

As the IPL 2026 season approaches, former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has stressed the significance of mental resilience for 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He pointed out that it is crucial for young players to remain grounded amidst the highs and lows of the game, especially in a high-stakes environment like the IPL.

Suryavanshi's Stellar Rise

Following an impressive 2025 season where he achieved the fastest century by an Indian in IPL history, Suryavanshi is set to continue his journey with the Rajasthan Royals after a triumphant U19 World Cup. He played a pivotal role in securing the U19 title, scoring a remarkable 175 in the final against England, earning accolades such as 'Player of the Match' and 'Player of the Tournament'. His journey has been marked by record-breaking performances and a series of sixes.

Pathan's Insights on Young Talent

During a segment on JioStar's 'IPL Today Live', Pathan highlighted the volatility of young players' careers, noting that they can quickly rise to fame and just as swiftly fade away. He cited examples of players who, despite hefty auction prices, fail to deliver in subsequent seasons. Pathan expressed interest in observing how players like Prashant Veer, who was acquired by Chennai Super Kings for over Rs 14 crore, handle pressure situations, particularly in critical moments of the game.

Mentorship and Continuous Improvement

Turning his attention to Suryavanshi, who will soon celebrate his 15th birthday, Pathan emphasized the importance of mentorship and ongoing skill enhancement for a successful career. He warned that teams might devise strategies to counter Suryavanshi's strengths, such as targeting his off-stump. Adapting to various bowling styles and pace variations will be essential for him to maintain his scoring ability.

Record-Breaking Achievements

In the U19 World Cup, Suryavanshi emerged as the second-highest run-scorer, amassing 439 runs across seven matches with an impressive average of 62.71 and a strike rate of 169.49. He set a record with 30 sixes, surpassing the previous record held by South Africa's Dewald Brevis. Additionally, he leads India in U19 ODIs with 1,412 runs in 25 innings, showcasing his potential as a future star.

A Promising Future Ahead

Since October 2024, Suryavanshi has been on an upward trajectory, first gaining attention with a 58-ball century against Australia U19. His IPL journey began with a Rs 1.1 crore deal with Rajasthan Royals, making him the youngest player in IPL history. He has continued to break records, including becoming the youngest T20 centurion and the first Indian to achieve the fastest IPL fifty. His remarkable performances across various formats have established him as a rising star in Indian cricket.
