Irfan Pathan Discusses Fitness Challenges for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Mohammed Shami Ahead of World Cup 2027
Fitness Concerns for Senior Players
Irfan Pathan, the former Indian all-rounder, emphasized that senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and pacer Mohammed Shami face significant challenges in maintaining regular game time to ensure their fitness ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.
In a conversation with Boria Majumdar on Revsportz, Pathan noted that Rohit and Virat, who retired from T20I cricket after last year's World Cup victory, also stepped away from Test cricket prior to India's tour of England, which marked the beginning of the new ICC World Test Championship cycle for 2025-27. Meanwhile, Shami, who has not declared his retirement from any format, was absent from the England tour and the Asia Cup T20I squad.
Challenges for Rohit, Kohli, and Shami
Pathan highlighted that the primary challenge for these players is to engage in 'regular cricket'. He shared his own experience, stating, "At 41, I participate in two to three leagues annually, but my bowling is limited due to retirement. I play one league in November, another in June-July, and one in October, which leads to a stop-and-start scenario that complicates maintaining fitness."
He further explained that for professional cricketers, whose main focus is cricket, the biggest hurdle is staying fit while playing regularly. With Virat primarily participating in the IPL and limited first-class cricket, maintaining consistent game time will be difficult. Pathan noted that the shift towards T20 cricket has reduced the number of one-day matches, which could impact their preparation for the World Cup 2027.
Importance of Fitness for World Cup Selection
Pathan mentioned that he has discussed fitness with Rohit, who is reportedly very committed to it. He also expressed confidence in Virat's dedication, given his rigorous practice sessions in England. Shami has also shown a strong desire to improve his fitness, which is crucial for their chances in the upcoming World Cup.
As a broadcaster, Pathan believes that the regular game time these players receive will be pivotal in determining their selection for the World Cup 2027. He stressed the need for clear communication regarding their future in international cricket, especially with figures like Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar involved in decision-making.
Upcoming Matches for Rohit and Virat
Following the Asia Cup, Rohit and Virat are set to compete in a three-match ODI series against Australia in October. There are concerns from the team management regarding their roles as potential options for the 2027 World Cup.
The upcoming ODIs scheduled for November-December against South Africa and in January against New Zealand will be crucial in assessing their fitness and form.
