Irfan Pathan Advocates for Extended ODI Series Amidst Stellar Performances by Rohit and Virat
Cricketing Landscape as the New Year Approaches
As the cricketing calendar turns to a new year, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has raised a pertinent question regarding the absence of longer ODI series. He noted that with the current ODI specialists performing exceptionally well, it is surprising that there are no five-match ODI series or triangular/quadrangular tournaments scheduled.
Rohit and Virat's Transition to ODI Exclusivity
Entering the New Year, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are now focused solely on ODIs after a remarkable 2025 season. They clinched the ICC Champions Trophy, showcasing their skills in pivotal matches and later dominated ODIs following a brief adjustment period during their Australian tour. Both players have also retired from Test cricket, leaving their supporters disheartened. Their journey towards the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup will commence with a three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11.
Pathan's Call for More ODI Matches
During a discussion on 'Follow the Blues' on JioHotstar, Pathan expressed, "Why can't we have five ODIs instead of three? Why not organize a triangular or quadrangular series? With these two legends playing only one format, it would be beneficial to see more of them on the field." He emphasized that the resurgence of interest in ODI cricket can be attributed to their performances.
Pathan further stated, "The World Cup is still some time away, and while it’s important to plan for it, I believe we should maximize our opportunities to watch these players. They should continue representing India and participate in domestic cricket as well, as their consistent play will only enhance their performance."
'Ro-Ko' Shine in ODI Statistics
The duo, affectionately dubbed 'Ro-Ko', emerged as India's leading run-scorers in ODIs this year. Virat accumulated 651 runs in 13 matches, boasting an impressive average of 65.10, including three centuries and four fifties, with a top score of 135 and a strike rate exceeding 96. Meanwhile, Rohit scored 650 runs in 14 innings at an average of 50.00, with two centuries and four fifties, and a best score of 121*. They also participated in two Vijay Hazare Trophy matches, where Virat scored 131 and 77, while Rohit managed 155* and a duck. Despite focusing solely on ODIs, both players have shattered numerous batting records, reminding fans of their peak performances.
Historical Context of India's ODI Series
The last instance of India engaging in a five-match ODI series was in 2019 against Australia, leading up to that year's World Cup. Since then, ODI series have typically been limited to three matches, even during World Cup years. The most recent triangular series took place in 2015 against England and Australia in Australia, prior to the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.
