Iraq's Stance on Security Cooperation with Iran
On Thursday, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi emphasized that Iraq will not permit its territory to be utilized for actions that threaten Iran. This statement was made during his inaugural official visit to Iran since taking office in May. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian highlighted the importance of a comprehensive strategic cooperation plan, which aims to enhance relations between the two neighboring countries. Pezeshkian urged for deeper collaboration in economic, infrastructure, and security sectors, advocating for regional cooperation to facilitate trade, investment, and movement of people based on their shared historical and cultural connections.
Transport and Investment Initiatives
Pezeshkian announced that Iran is working on improving transport links with neighboring countries and expressed hope for Iraq's involvement in a regional network designed to create an integrated transportation system. This initiative is expected to enhance transit, investment opportunities, and port development throughout the region. He also pointed out that instability in either country would have direct repercussions on the other, highlighting the necessity for ongoing security coordination.
Border Security Concerns
Iran has called for the thorough implementation of the existing security agreement with Iraq, particularly focusing on eliminating anti-Iran armed groups from border areas. During al-Zaidi’s visit, officials from both nations signed four cooperation agreements and memorandums of understanding in the presence of the two leaders. The agreements included:
- A contract for the road transport of goods.
- A memorandum regarding the Khosravi-Khanaqin-Baghdad railway project.
- A sister-city agreement between Tehran and Baghdad.
- A memorandum focused on public administration, training, and human resources cooperation.
