Iran's Nuclear Agreement: Trump Claims Progress Amidst Diplomatic Tensions
Iran's Nuclear Stance and Recent Developments
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that Iran has committed to not pursuing nuclear weapons, although he cautioned that the nation could potentially alter its stance. In an interview with the New York Post's "Pod Force One" podcast, he emphasized the necessity of addressing Iran's nuclear ambitions, stating, "We can't allow them to develop a nuclear weapon, regardless of our economic success." He further asserted, "They've already agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons." When pressed on whether Iran had indeed accepted these terms, Trump responded affirmatively, noting, "Yes, they have agreed to that. However, they could change their mind, but that was a significant point of agreement."
Iran has yet to officially respond to Trump's remarks, but a government representative described the President's comments as "misleading". The official stated, "Iran is a long-standing member of the NPT, and its nuclear program has always been peaceful. Iran has never aimed for nuclear weapons, so there is nothing new about them ‘agreeing not to have' them." They further criticized the framing of the issue, asserting that it inaccurately suggests Iran was previously pursuing nuclear arms, which contradicts their declared policies and international obligations.
Recent diplomatic efforts between Iran and the US have stalled, particularly after Tehran halted discussions regarding Israel's military actions in Lebanon, which has now entered its 100th day of conflict.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated on Tuesday that negotiations are still in progress, despite Iran's assertions. He informed the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Iran might be open to discussing elements of their nuclear program. Rubio remarked, "There is a possibility that they could agree to negotiate aspects of their nuclear program, which they previously refused to even acknowledge, let alone discuss."
Additionally, Iran's state-affiliated news outlet reported that Tehran plans to fully close the Strait of Hormuz in response to alleged violations of a ceasefire. When asked if the blockade would still be in effect by Labor Day, Trump suggested, "It could be, but I think it's unlikely. I believe this situation will resolve itself relatively quickly."
