The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has announced the death of Behnam Rezaei, its Deputy Intelligence Chief for the Navy, following a targeted military operation amid rising tensions with the United States and Israel. Reports from Iranian state media and allied sources indicated on Friday that Rezaei was killed during a US-Israeli military action, although specific details regarding the attack's location have not been disclosed by Tehran.

International news outlets have reported that Rezaei lost his life alongside Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, the head of the IRGC Navy, during an airstrike in Bandar Abbas, a key port city in southern Iran along the Persian Gulf. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that the operation successfully targeted high-ranking IRGC naval officials, including Rezaei, marking a significant setback for the IRGC's naval command.

In an article published in Foreign Affairs, Zarif, who was pivotal in negotiating the 2015 nuclear agreement, suggested that Iran should "declare victory and negotiate" to achieve two goals: to conclude the current hostilities and avert future conflicts.
