Iranian Women's Football Team Protests National Anthem at AFC Asian Cup 2026
Bold Protest by Iranian Women’s Football Team
During their opening match at the AFC Asian Cup 2026 in Australia, the Iranian women's football team made a significant statement by choosing not to sing the national anthem of the Islamic regime prior to their game against South Korea.
Despite the match ending in a 3-0 defeat for Iran, with Kim Hye-ri netting two goals and Choe Yu-ri contributing another, the players' silent protest garnered international attention, overshadowing the scoreline and showcasing their bravery on a global platform.
Social Media Reaction
Samantha Smith, a notable figure on social media, highlighted the protest, stating, "The Iranian women’s national football team refused to sing the anthem of the Islamic Regime. Tonight. At the opening match of the Asian Cup. In front of the entire world. So, to all liberal Western women: Watch and learn. THIS is what real feminism looks like."

India's Kit Issues Before Vietnam Match
In a separate incident, the Indian women's football team faced unexpected challenges as they prepared for their opening match against Vietnam in Perth on March 4. The Blue Tigresses expressed frustration after receiving training jerseys that were ill-fitting for most players.
The All India Football Federation attributed the delay in kit arrival to permit issues. However, upon receiving the gear at their hotel, the team discovered that the jerseys were designed for a youth squad, rendering them unusable for the senior players.
Having recently completed a training camp in Turkey, the team may now need to source kits locally. Senior players have already reached out to the AIFF, voicing their disappointment over the situation and calling for a swift resolution.
With Iran's protest making headlines and India's preparations disrupted, the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 is already witnessing significant off-field events ahead of the group stage.
