Iran Rules Out Direct Talks with US During Pakistan Visit
Iran's Stance on US Negotiations
Iran has made it clear that there will be no discussions with American officials during the visit of its delegation to Pakistan. The Iranian team, led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, has arrived in Islamabad, potentially for a second round of talks with the United States. This follows President Donald Trump's recent decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely.
Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, stated on social media that "No meeting is scheduled between Iran and the US." Instead, he mentioned that Pakistani officials would act as intermediaries to relay messages between the two delegations. Baqaei expressed gratitude to the Pakistani government for its ongoing mediation efforts. He noted, "We are in Islamabad for an official visit. FM Araghchi will engage with high-ranking Pakistani officials as part of their mediation efforts to end the US-imposed conflict and restore peace in our region. Iran's views will be communicated to Pakistan," he posted on social media.

Earlier on Friday, the White House announced that its representatives would meet with Araghchi. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner are set to travel to Pakistan for discussions with the Iranian delegation. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed, "I can verify that special envoy Witkoff and Jared Kushner will head to Pakistan tomorrow morning for mediated talks with the Iranian representatives, facilitated by our Pakistani allies, who have been exceptional mediators throughout this process." She expressed hope for a productive dialogue that could advance towards a potential agreement.
Leavitt also mentioned that Vance would not be traveling to Pakistan on Saturday but remains actively involved in the discussions. "He will stay in the United States, alongside the president, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the national security team for updates. Everyone is prepared to travel to Pakistan if needed," she added. "Initially, Steve and Jared will go there to report back to the president, vice president, and the rest of the team," Leavitt concluded.
