Iran Reaffirms Control Over the Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions
Iran's Sovereignty Over the Strait of Hormuz
Iran has reiterated its authority over the vital Strait of Hormuz, issuing a strong warning to both commercial and naval vessels. The Iranian government has emphasized that all ships must comply with established shipping protocols to avoid serious consequences. A statement from the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, reported by Iranian media, declared, "The management of the Strait of Hormuz is fully under the control of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran." It further stated that all commercial vessels and tankers are required to navigate only through designated routes and must secure permission from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy. Any breach of these regulations could significantly threaten the safety of maritime traffic.
This announcement coincides with ongoing negotiations between Iran and Oman regarding the implementation of tolls for ships passing through the Strait, with plans to share the generated revenue. Tensions have escalated following an incident where the US military targeted a commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman with a Hellfire missile. According to US Central Command, the Gambia-flagged ship, named Lian Star, was disabled after it ignored over 20 warnings and attempted to approach an Iranian port.
In a recent update, former President Donald Trump indicated that the United States would lift the naval blockade previously imposed on Iranian ports. He announced on Truth Social that vessels stranded near the Strait of Hormuz due to the blockade could start returning home, suggesting a potential de-escalation of tensions in this strategically significant area. However, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth clarified that the naval blockade remains firmly in effect.
