Iran Launches Missiles in Response to Alleged US Attack on Tanker
Iran's Military Response in the Strait of Hormuz
On Thursday, Iranian state media announced that Iranian military forces fired missiles at what they termed 'enemy units' in the Strait of Hormuz. This action was reportedly in retaliation for a US attack on an Iranian tanker in this crucial maritime corridor. According to the IRIB broadcaster, a military spokesperson indicated that the Iranian forces acted after the alleged strike on the tanker, asserting that the targeted units suffered damage and retreated from the vicinity. However, specifics regarding the damage or the identities of the vessels involved were not disclosed.
The United States has not yet responded to these claims from Iran. An Israeli journalist, Doron Kadosh, who reports for military radio, mentioned that Israeli officials suspect Iran has recently targeted US missile destroyers following a US operation against Iranian tankers in the area. He noted that Israel is 'closely monitoring the situation' as tensions escalate in the Gulf region.
Additionally, an Israeli source informed Israel Hayom that there had been an exchange of fire between Iranian and US forces in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil transit. These developments occur amidst increasing military activities along Iran's southern coast, including reported explosions and drone interceptions near Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island. As of now, independent verification of the alleged confrontation between Iranian and US forces has not been obtained.
