Iran Launches Inquiry into Attack on Indian Vessels in Hormuz Strait
Investigation Initiated by Iran
Iran has commenced an investigation regarding the assault on two vessels flying the Indian flag in the Strait of Hormuz, allegedly by gunboats associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). During a press briefing on Monday, April 20, Esmail Baghaei, the spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, confirmed that authorities are probing the incident to determine whether the firing was indeed executed by Iranian forces. He stated, “Our competent authorities are investigating whether the shooting at the Indian ship was really carried out by our forces or not. This incident is under investigation.”
In response to the attack, India summoned Dr. Mohammad Fathali, the Iranian ambassador, to express its concerns. The situation escalated as Iran's actions against vessels in the Hormuz Strait have increased, particularly after Tehran closed this crucial maritime trade route in retaliation to the US blockade in the area. The Ministry of External Affairs in India arranged a meeting with the Iranian Ambassador, where Foreign Secretary conveyed India's serious concerns regarding the shooting incident involving the two Indian-flagged ships. He emphasized the significance of ensuring the safety of merchant vessels and their crews, recalling that Iran had previously facilitated the safe passage of ships heading to India.
Furthermore, the Foreign Secretary urged the Iranian Ambassador to communicate India's concerns to the relevant authorities in Iran and to expedite the process of ensuring safe passage for India-bound vessels through the Strait. The Iranian Ambassador assured that he would relay these concerns to the Iranian government.
