Iran Claims to Down US Fighter Jets Amid Ongoing Gulf Conflict
Iran's Claims of Downing US Aircraft
As the conflict in the Gulf and Middle East extends into its second month, Iran announced on Friday that it had shot down a second American F-35 fighter jet, according to reports from the Iranian news agency Mehr News. Tehran suggested that the US pilot likely did not survive the incident. However, the US Central Command has yet to verify any losses of its F-35 aircraft due to Iranian missile strikes.
Amid these claims, an unverified video surfaced on social media platform X, depicting a fighter jet being targeted during the ongoing conflict. Confusion arose when reports emerged suggesting that Iran had also downed a US F-15E jet, leading to uncertainty about whether the aircraft in question was an F-35 or an F-15E. Further investigations revealed that the debris shown in the video matched that of an F-15E, not an F-35. An account on X, Clash Reports, noted that Iranian state media had released images of wreckage from a US Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle, stating, "Iran initially claimed it had shot down an F-35, but the wreckage shown clearly matches an F-15E."

Earlier, a verified Iranian account on X, the Consulate General of the I.R. Iran in Mumbai, shared similar images and a video asserting that Iran had struck an F-35, although the same visuals were also used to support claims regarding the downing of an F-15E.

In a related development, an affiliate of Iranian state television reported that a US fighter pilot had ejected from an aircraft in southwestern Iran and was subsequently captured by Iranian forces. Additionally, Iran has claimed to have shot down a US UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter as hostilities in the Middle East continue to intensify.
