Upcoming Negotiations in Islamabad

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Iran is preparing to present an offer to meet the expectations of the United States. Peace discussions between the two nations are anticipated to take place this weekend in Islamabad, Pakistan. Trump mentioned during a phone interview with a news agency that the specifics of the offer are still unclear, stating, "They're making an offer and we'll have to see." This upcoming round of talks follows Trump's recent decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely.

The US has maintained that any agreement with Iran must involve the country relinquishing its enriched uranium and ensuring the free flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, arrived in Pakistan earlier today as part of a diplomatic mission that also includes Oman and Russia, focusing on bilateral relations and regional issues.

Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, clarified on social media that no direct meeting between Iran and the US is scheduled. Instead, he indicated that Pakistani officials would facilitate communication between the two delegations, expressing gratitude to the Pakistani government for its mediation efforts.

Earlier on Friday, the White House confirmed that its representatives would meet with Araghchi. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner are set to travel to Pakistan for discussions with the Iranian team. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, "I can confirm special envoy Witkoff and Jared Kushner will be off to Pakistan again tomorrow morning to engage in talks, direct talks mediated by the Pakistanis, who have been incredible friends and mediators throughout this entire process, with representatives from the Iranian delegation." She expressed hope for a productive dialogue that could advance towards a deal.

Leavitt also noted that Vance would not be accompanying the delegation to Pakistan on Saturday but remains actively involved in the discussions from the US. "He'll be standing by here in the United States, along with the president and the Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the entire national security team for updates. And, of course, everyone will be on standby to fly to Pakistan if necessary," she added. "But first, Steve and Jared will be going over there to report back to the president, the vice president, and the rest of the team," Leavitt concluded.
