Middle East Conflict Escalates

New Delhi - Following the recent U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, conflict has erupted in the Middle East. Iran has taken control of the Strait of Hormuz, effectively blocking this crucial maritime route. In a significant development, Tehran has granted permission for Indian tankers to navigate through this area, as revealed by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts

The minister emphasized that dialogue is essential for achieving results, describing it as a continuous process. In an interview with a financial publication, he stated, 'I am currently engaged in discussions with them, and some outcomes have emerged from these talks. This process is still ongoing, and if I see positive results, I will certainly continue these discussions.'

India's Perspective on Negotiations

Jaishankar further noted, 'From India's perspective, it is certainly better to engage in discussions, coordinate with each other, and find solutions.' He clarified that there is no overarching agreement with Iran for Indian-flagged vessels, and each ship's movement is treated as a separate incident.

No Exchange for Iran

He dismissed any notion that Iran received something in return for allowing the tankers passage. Jaishankar remarked that there has been a historical exchange between Delhi and Tehran, which formed the basis for their discussions.

Current Shipping Situation

He stated, 'This is not merely an exchange issue. There are established relations between India and Iran. We consider this conflict to be very unfortunate.' Jaishankar added, 'This is just the beginning. We have several more ships in the region. Therefore, while this is a welcome step, discussions are ongoing as work continues on this matter.'

Safe Passage for Indian Vessels

Two Indian-flagged tankers carrying liquefied petroleum gas have successfully passed through the Strait of Hormuz. Due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, this strait has become a critical chokepoint, serving as the only route from the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea.
