Allegations of Airstrike on Humanitarian Mission

A plane from Mahan Air, which was en route to India, was reportedly damaged at Mashhad Airport in Iran. This information was initially shared by Iranian sources on March 30, but there was no confirmation regarding the perpetrator of the attack. Recently, Iran has accused the United States of conducting the airstrike, claiming that a humanitarian aircraft was targeted. Iran has labeled this incident as a war crime.

Details of the Humanitarian Mission

It has been reported that the aircraft was on a humanitarian mission to deliver medicines and essential supplies from India to Iran. However, the mission was halted before it could commence due to the attack. As of now, there has been no response from the United States regarding this incident. The Iranian Embassy in India stated on social media that attacking a plane carrying medical supplies constitutes a violation of international law and is considered a war crime.

International Law Violations

Furthermore, the embassy emphasized that targeting a civilian aircraft engaged in humanitarian efforts is against international aviation regulations and humanitarian principles. Iran's Civil Aviation Organization echoed these sentiments, condemning the attack. The embassy clarified that the plane was arriving in Iran with medical supplies from various countries and had landed at Mashhad Airport. They pointed out that international regulations, such as the Chicago and Montreal Conventions, explicitly state that any action jeopardizing the safety of civilian aircraft is an international crime.

Concerns Over Casualties and Damage

According to the Geneva Conventions, attacking planes involved in humanitarian assistance is considered a war crime. However, it remains unclear whether there were any casualties from this attack or the extent of the damage to the aircraft. It is also uncertain whether the plane was preparing for takeoff or was simply stationary at the time of the incident. As previously mentioned, there has been no official statement from the United States regarding this event.

Humanitarian Aid Between India and Iran

In the meantime, it is important to note the ongoing humanitarian assistance between India and Iran. Recently, aid was sent from New Delhi to Iran, which was received by the Iranian Red Crescent Society to support the healthcare system there. According to reports, the Mahan Air airline in question has been under U.S. sanctions, with allegations of its connections to the IRGC. However, Iran has consistently denied these accusations.
