Iran's Allegations Against the United States

Iran has leveled accusations against the United States, claiming that an overnight assault targeted a nuclear power facility still being built in the southwestern region of the country. This assertion has prompted the United Nations' nuclear oversight body to take a closer look. The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran reported that several projectiles hit the Darkhovin nuclear power plant site located in Khuzestan province, with the incident occurring at 3:39 a.m. local time. Construction on this facility commenced in 2022.

Iran's Government Responds Strongly

The Iranian nuclear agency did not mince words in its condemnation, labeling the incident a terrorist act. In an official statement, the agency accused the United States of engaging in bullying and lawlessness, characterizing the strike as an aggressive breach of international law. The statement declared, “The terrorist and criminal US regime, whose nature is nothing but bullying and lawlessness, carried out an aggressive and barbaric act in violation of international law.” Furthermore, the agency emphasized the importance of the Darkhovin facility, referring to it as a representation of Iran's national pride and scientific autonomy.

International Atomic Energy Agency Investigates

In light of the attack reports, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that it is investigating the incident at the construction site. The IAEA indicated that the facility is still in the early phases of development and did not contain any nuclear materials during its last inspection. Consequently, the agency stated that it does not perceive any radiological threat to the nearby areas.

IAEA Urges Caution Around Nuclear Facilities

Although the IAEA has dismissed the possibility of radiological danger, Director General Rafael Grossi took this opportunity to reiterate the need for military restraint near nuclear sites. The agency has also contacted Iranian officials regarding the publicized reports of the attack and promised to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
