Dharamshala: In light of India's retaliatory actions following the Pahalgam terrorist incident, the IPL clash between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians, initially set for May 11th in Dharamshala, has been rescheduled to Mumbai. This decision comes as the central government has mandated the closure of airports near the Pakistan border until May 10th, directly impacting the Chandigarh airport and necessitating the match's relocation.
Travel Challenges for Mumbai Team
The Mumbai squad was expected to arrive in Chandigarh for the match against Punjab Kings. However, with the airport's closure, the team would face a lengthy road journey via Delhi to reach Dharamshala, which led to the decision to move the venue. Reports indicate that the extensive travel time was a significant factor in this change.
Ongoing Discussions for Upcoming Matches
The IPL governing body is currently in talks with central government officials to determine the status of the Punjab-Delhi match scheduled for tomorrow in Dharamshala. Both teams are presently in the area, and the airport closure may also impact the Delhi team's return after the match.
Dharamshala Stadium Details
The stadium in Dharamshala, which accommodates 20,000 spectators, is situated just 60 kilometers from the India-Pakistan border. Although the Punjab-Mumbai match has been shifted to Mumbai, it is unlikely to take place at the Wankhede Stadium, which is Mumbai's home ground.
Alternative Venues Under Consideration
To prevent giving Mumbai an unfair advantage, the BCCI is contemplating hosting the match at either DY Patil Stadium or Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. However, there are concerns regarding the readiness of these venues on such short notice.
Mumbai's Playoff Aspirations
As the IPL playoffs approach, every match becomes critical for the teams involved. The Mumbai Indians faced a tough defeat against Gujarat Titans in their last match, which jeopardized their playoff chances. Currently, they sit in the top four with 14 points from 12 games, but must secure victories in their final two matches to ensure a playoff spot. Their next opponents include Punjab and Delhi Capitals, who are also competing for a playoff position.
