IPL 2026: Season Opener Set Without Traditional Ceremony

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is set to begin on March 28, featuring a match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, this season will not include the customary opening ceremony, as a mark of respect for the victims of a tragic stampede that occurred last year. The tournament will follow a double round-robin format, culminating in playoffs starting May 26. The decision to forgo the ceremony reflects the BCCI's commitment to honoring those affected by the tragedy while still promising a grand closing ceremony at the season's end.

IPL 2026 Kicks Off with RCB vs SRH

The 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to commence on Saturday, March 28, featuring the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, facing off against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Earlier this month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled the schedule for the tournament's initial phase, which includes 20 matches.

Match Schedule and Format

In the first phase of IPL 2026, all ten teams will compete in four matches each. The remaining fixtures will be announced shortly, as the BCCI awaited the Election Commission of India (ECI) to finalize the dates for the State Assembly Elections before releasing the complete schedule.

The tournament will consist of 84 matches played in a double round-robin format, with each team participating in 16 league matches prior to the playoffs. The playoffs are scheduled to begin on May 26, culminating in the final match on May 31.

No Opening Ceremony This Year

Traditionally, an opening ceremony featuring performances and festivities marks the start of each IPL season. However, for IPL 2026, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium will not host such an event before the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

This decision was made by the BCCI to pay tribute to the victims of a tragic stampede that occurred outside the stadium last June, which resulted in the loss of 11 lives and injuries to 50 others during a celebration of RCB's first IPL victory.

Honoring the Victims

In remembrance of the stampede victims, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) have decided to leave 11 seats vacant during every home match. Additionally, a memorial plaque has been unveiled outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the cancellation of the opening ceremony, stating that no formal functions or cultural programs will take place at the season's start in Bengaluru as a mark of respect for the victims.

Future Ceremonies

Despite the absence of an opening ceremony, Saikia mentioned that a closing ceremony will occur as usual before the final match on May 31. This is not the first instance of an IPL season starting without a traditional ceremony; in 2019, the opening ceremony was canceled to honor the families of CRPF personnel killed in the Pulwama terror attack.

From 2020 to 2022, the IPL also did not hold opening ceremonies due to COVID-19 protocols, focusing instead on safety measures to ensure the tournament's continuation.
