Itanagar, Sept 24: Authorities in Arunachal Pradesh have pinpointed the vehicle believed to have been involved in the attack on Sikkimese rapper Ugen Namgyal Bhutia, known as UNB. A senior police official confirmed that one individual has been identified as a suspect in the case.
According to Lower Dibang Valley Superintendent of Police Ringu Ngupok, the exact involvement of the suspect is still being determined, and efforts are ongoing to identify additional individuals connected to the incident.
“We have a suspect in mind, but further verification is necessary,” Ngupok stated.
UNB and his entourage were reportedly assaulted by a group of eight to ten men near Tiwari Gaon in the Lower Dibang Valley district on Monday evening while returning to Roing after performing at a concert in Anini.
The SP noted that the remote nature of the location and the absence of mobile network coverage have complicated the investigation.
“The assault occurred approximately 39 km from Roing in a secluded area lacking network connectivity. This has posed a challenge, but the Roing police are making every effort,” he added.
Police have been stationed at various points, and technical analysis is underway as part of the investigation. Ngupok dismissed rumors that the case would be transferred to a Special Investigation Team (SIT), asserting that the Roing Police are conducting a comprehensive inquiry.
Investigators are also looking into potential motives for the attack, including a reported professional rivalry between UNB and a local rapper, Don Kam.
“We are aware of the ongoing rivalry between the two artists and the discussions circulating on social media. This angle is also being explored in our investigation,” the SP remarked.
In response to the incident, Sikkim's Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang reached out to his counterpart in Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, on Tuesday, urging measures to ensure the safety of the Sikkimese artist.
