Dr. Ajit Kumar, the Director of Public Relations, condemned the incident and assured complete transparency in the investigation, stating, "The inquiry is ongoing."
Suspensions Issued Amidst Investigation
In connection with the suicide case of Jyoti Sharma, a second-year BDS student from Greater Noida, four professors, including the Dean, have been suspended. This was confirmed by a university official on Tuesday. Dr. Ajit Kumar reported that Dean Dr. M. Siddharth, Professor Dr. Anurag Awasthi, Assistant Professor Dr. Surbhi, and Professor Dr. Ashish Chaudhary have all been named as accused in the FIR related to the case.
Details of the Incident
Jyoti Sharma, a resident of Gurugram, tragically took her own life on July 18 by hanging herself from a fan in her hostel room. Following this, a case was registered against seven individuals for allegedly harassing the student, leading to the arrest of two professors, Sherry Vashisth and Mahendra Singh Chauhan. The university had formed an investigative committee, promising to submit a report to police officials within five days, with the deadline approaching on Wednesday.
Ongoing Investigations and University Response
On Monday, the investigative committee recorded statements from the involved professors, wardens, security personnel, and students. The police also interrogated the hostel warden and other professors on the same day. Authorities have sealed the BDS department, and it will remain closed until the investigation report is finalized. Dr. Kumar mentioned that due to the controversy following the suicide, exams and events scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at the university have been postponed.
Future Plans and Community Response
The university management has announced that classes will resume on July 23, along with the scheduling of exams. Meanwhile, on Monday, lawyers, social activists, and student organizations protested outside the district magistrate's office, submitting a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding action against the accused professors.
