Investigation Underway After Tragic Incident Involving Student in Odisha

CCTV Footage Analyzed by Odisha Police

On Saturday, Odisha police reviewed CCTV footage from a petrol station showing a woman purchasing petrol in a bottle. The woman in the footage appears to be of a similar age to the student who tragically set herself on fire at the Balasore college campus, according to an official report.

The crime branch is currently examining the CCTV recordings from petrol stations in the area, but it remains unclear how the woman obtained the petrol.

The 20-year-old student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore reportedly committed self-immolation due to inaction against a professor who allegedly sexually harassed her.

After battling for her life for nearly 60 hours, the student succumbed to her injuries on Monday night at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

In response to this incident, petrol stations in the district have ceased selling petrol in bottles.

Additionally, a fact-finding team from the University Grants Commission (UGC) is investigating the matter and has been meeting with various stakeholders over the past two days.

Rajkumar Mittal, who leads the team, stated that they will soon compile their findings into a report.
