Imphal, Oct 14: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal has established a four-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a 25-year-old woman after childbirth, amid claims of medical negligence from her family.

In a statement released on Wednesday, RIMS expressed deep regret over the passing of Thokchom Ongbi Binaroi and confirmed that a post-mortem examination is set to determine the cause of her death.

The committee is expected to deliver its findings within three working days, after which appropriate actions will be taken based on the report, according to the institute.

However, RIMS has not revealed the identities or qualifications of the committee members.

Binaroi, married to Thokchom Marson from Keishampat Jailor Leirak, was admitted to RIMS for the delivery of her first child on Tuesday. She reportedly gave birth to a daughter around 11 pm before her untimely death.

Her family has raised serious allegations of medical negligence following her death.

Marson claimed that his wife experienced severe bleeding after being taken out of the operating room and was later moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

He also questioned the decision to conduct the delivery at night, stating that the family had been informed earlier that the procedure would occur the next morning.

According to Marson, the attending physician, Dr. Rameshwor, had recommended her admission.

“Initially, she was advised to have a normal delivery, but after receiving approximately three bottles of intravenous fluids, she was taken for surgery,” he explained.

Marson is demanding clarity on the events leading to his wife's death and accountability from the medical staff involved.

RIMS has not specifically addressed the family's allegations in its recent statement. The cause of death and any potential medical negligence are yet to be determined.

In the meantime, security measures were intensified at the hospital on Wednesday morning after a large crowd gathered on Tuesday, creating tension following Binaroi's death.

By Wednesday morning, the situation had largely stabilized, with security personnel stationed throughout the facility.

Reports of vandalism emerged during the incident, although RIMS did not detail the extent of the damage to property.

In its statement, the institute condemned the vandalism, acknowledging the family's grief but asserting that such actions are unacceptable.

RIMS urged everyone involved to maintain calm, exercise restraint, and allow the established procedures to unfold as the investigation continues.
